This evening, I spilled a cup of tea into my keyboard. It did in my CM Storm Quickfire that I’ve had for... 8+ years. It survived a cup of coffee earlier this year but tea was too much. I did my best to clean it up with isopropyl alcohol
but spacebar is permanently
hosed. I may desolder the switch then replace it before getting rid of it for good. However, that didn’t solve my “I don’t have a keyboard problem” so I got in the car and rushed to Fry’s before close.
How come keyboards have gotten more expensive and obnoxious? My original plan was to get a cheap keyboard to hold me over, but the store was a mess (tons of open boxes, nothing on the right shelf, and totally picked over). I decided to get the best I could reasonably afford to replace my mechanical keyboard rather than shoot for a stopgap. I decided on this Viper V765.
It’s fine.
It has a good amount of click. Feel isn’t as direct as Cherry switches, howwwwever these switches are IP56 certified. That means they will resist getting splashed or full of dust.
Now let’s talk about what sucks. It has a plastic volume rocker than is chee sy AF. It’s about 20% larger than my past keyboard and leaves not much mouse room for me on my tray. The full RGB lighting is...
There are two useful modes: Static (various customized on/off) and Reactive. Reactive just glows whatever key you press. The rest are basically full techno raves. What in the hell were they thinking?
Also, you can see my other grip in this GIF. The keys sit too high above the keyboard. You can run half your finger under the bottom row of keys. Boo. It just feels kind of cheap. I’m sure I’ll grow to like it eventually. If not, I’ll need to go add some clients.
Again, this is really the biggest pro to this thing. And sorry for the awesome pun.

I am not looking forward to the day that my Das Keyboard II (basically a glorified blank-keyed Cherry G80-3000 with blue switches) finally bites the dust. I’ve removed the key caps and blown the dust and grime out twice since new, and every once in awhile it’ll miss an initial keystroke (maybe once a week). Been going strong for 12 years but I’m not sure it’ll make it another 12.
I paid $79.95 for it back in 2007, I doubt I’ll ever get as good a keyboard for that cheap again. This thing was even made in the Czech Republic!
I wonder if I can just desolder and replace the mechanical switches one by one as they wear out...

Technically, you can probably do that. But yeah, same situation here. I already miss my CM. It’s very similar to the Das Keyboard and I’ve had it since before I moved to California.

New keyboards and computer parts are absurd. I bet I could save at least $50 on a new build if it wasn't for this all RGB nonsense.

Is it contagious ?

Nope. Mostly just self-inflicted. Though I suspect transmission is possible through overexposure to keyboard specific sub-reddits and blogs...

I have a keyboard that’s been soldered and desoldered a dozen times when
I felt like changing
the switches to a new flavor. No problem there.

Oh, son, let me introduce you to the world of mechanical keyboards. I currently have one that cost over $400 to set up. 100% worth it, though. However, I usually recommend to people that they start with the GMMK from the PC gaming race:
https://www.pcgamingrace.com/products/gmmk-full-customized
Once one realizes that Cherry MX switches are basically crap, and there are so many better switches out there, and keycaps, and more specifically keycap profiles (MT3 FTMFW), well, lif
e gets so much better...

I just use a 1993 Compaq RT101 with modded superbright blue Caps/Numlock/scrolllock LEDs......have done for the last 16 years. :P
I’ve used the same Logitech MX510 wired optical gaming
mouse as well! That’s an older picture (2007 or so?) The keyboard looks exactly the same, though it needs a bit of a cleaning as it has some of what Moog from MightyCarMods calls ‘human slime’, lol. The mouse looks TERRIBLE as the exterior has worn a lot, but it still works perfectly!

I use the Microsoft Sculpt. Spilled a good amount of tea on it. Ran it under tap water, then took it apart and dried it with compressed air (from the garage, not a nice clean can. then hair drier for 10 mins. Works great. I was lucky it is a membrane type.

I use this at my desk at work:
Most generic chicklet-key standard-issue Dell keyboard. But I happen to like the feel of it, it’s simliar to the various laptops I use, and if I have any issue with it, I know there’s a pile of like 100 more in the computer shop and I can just grab another one. So far, so good, but it’s only been about a year.
Maybe I’ve just never used a really nice keyboard?

I wanted a mechanical keyboard for the office that specifically did not have RGB. So I bought a Gigabyte K83 with Cherry reds, it was $50 or less when I bought it and it’s fantastic. I own two now, one for home one for work.

My kid would love that keyboard!

I just buy industrial Cherry keyboards used off eBay. $25 or so all day long. Good switches, nice form factors and layouts.

Das Keyboard. Pricey, but oh so worth it.

Easy to justify that money for something that lasts forever and provides the primary input method to the PC.
Of course I’m using some ~15 year old Logitech because I like the capacitive volume/media controls too much to abandon.

I just want a mechanical keyboard that doesn't light up like a drug trip or have the word "Xtreme" somewhere on the box. Is that too much to ask?

I used to have a DiNovo Edge with the capacitive buttons. That was a lovely media keyboard.

I had the original diNovo:
very much not capacitive, and thus nowhere near as nice. I liked the thick sides which made it easy to grab without accidentally hitting keys, which is a good feature for a “living room” keyboard. Had to get rid of it last year though, it had been in storage and the soft touch part had both gotten sort of melty and absorbed a bunch of random dirt. Replaced it with a Logitech K830, which is generally worse, though having back lit keys is also nice for a media keyboard.
